Norfolk finished their County II golf fixtures in fantastic form on Finals Day at Abbotsley Golf Club, Cambridgeshire. Continuing the policy of giving younger players the opportunity to experience this level of match play Norfolk had six teenagers in their team, three making their County II debuts.

Of the nine singles matches played it was only the first and last players out, Charlotte Presland and Kat Hoey who succumbed to strong opposition from Essex.

Amelia Williamson, a regular for the team this year, was easily finding the greens, putting well and with birdies on a couple of par 5’s was two under par at the turn and won convincingly 9/7.

Ellie Brown also continued her excellent form this season for the team with a 4/3 win, whilst Juliet Fenton and Rebecca Shubrook also won 3/1 and 4/3 respectively.

It perhaps should not have been a surprise, following on from their excellent Regional Junior County Matches at Bawburgh last month, that the young debutants would perform well.

Chloe Rowswell with an eagle on a par 5, was five up at the turn and went on to win 5/4.   Amy Taylor and Sian Fenn-Green took the opportunity to see most of the course and had the closest matches but showed great composure to overcome their more experienced opponents on the 17th both winning 2/1.

At the end of the season whilst Essex remained undefeated overall, and thus took the trophy, Norfolk ended up narrowly losing to Bedfordshire 6.5/5.5 and managed not to concede a single rubber to Cambridgeshire 12/0, which must be a record.

With the number of youngsters who have now experienced golf at this level the future looks very promising for Norfolk ladies golf.

Norfolk travelled to The Warren to face Essex in their penultimate county match with Charlotte Presland acting as Captain for the day.

Despite a damp start the match was level after the morning foursomes. Charlotte and Juliet Fenton halved their match and the young combination of Ellie Brown and Amelia Williamson had a convincing win 4 & 3. The third pair of Rebecca Shubrook and Jessica Linge succumbed to lower handicap players, although valuable experience was gained for Jessica on her first away trip for the county II team.

The afternoon singles were mainly won or lost with the putter, unfortunately the home team knew the greens better. All the youngsters  played some excellent match play golf particularly Amelia who came from three down at the turn to birdie three holes in a row to go on and win 2 up. Rebecca meanwhile took a commanding lead in her match with steady play and won convincingly 7 & 6.

This tie remains live as the team now goes on to Finals Day at Abbotsley, Cambridgeshire, where three singles matches are played against each county.

Match v Bedfordshire

Wensum Valley - Monday July 29th

Norfolk faced Bedfordshire at Wensum Valley in their second league match of the year, again fielding a team predominantly of youngsters new to county golf. Bedfordshire were also doing likewise.

Unfortunately after the morning foursomes Norfolk only secured a half from Jane Sheppard and Juliet Fenton despite some very close games.

The afternoons play was badly disrupted by three breaks for thunder and lightening. Ellie Brown and Jessica Rutherford, morning partners, both had convincing wins. Bedfordshire however adapted better to the conditions and took the honours elsewhere to reverse last years result and win 6.5 /2.5.

Nevertheless it was excellent experience for all concerned and highlighted the benefit gained by Bedfordshire having fitted in a practice round the day before.

The county II ladies made a flying start to their league campaign with a 9-0 win over Cambs and Hunts at Swaffham.

Like Norfolk the Cambs team was fielding a mix of youth and experience. Unlike Norfolk however the morning foursomes were not necessarily paired as such as Cambs preferred to play a tried and tested pairing unfortunately without success.

At lunch Norfolk were three up all pairs having gelled well and it was perhaps fortunate, or good planning, that the afternoon singles saw the youngsters matched against each other.

The earlier pairing of debutant Kat Hoey and Jane Sheppard saw both continue the trend set in the morning by also winning their respective singles 3/2, Kat’s being over Cambs county championship semi finalist Tina Bradley.

Norfolk’s youngsters played very well. Amelia Williamson beat Laura Todd 2/1, Laura had first team experience last year and Ellie Brown, also making her debut, like Amelia, played some excellent golf to win 5/4. Although playing against young opposition the Norfolk girls were still some two and three years short of their counterparts.

Rebecca Shubrook and Harriett Carr both had convincing wins 5/4 and 6/5 respectively to complete an all round victory for Norfolk.

With the withdrawal of Suffolk from county II golf Norfolk now have a match against the Seniors in June before resuming their league fixtures at home to Bedfordshire on 29th July at Wensum Valley.
