A reorganisation of the inter-county finals day gave the competition its closest finish for years. Essex, in a league of their own, were clear winners, but all the other counties had to try to win or halve a match!  A team of eight saw 2 players from each county contest a singles game against each of the other counties. Norfolk needed 2 wins against Cambs and Hunts and Beds to halve the matches so the pressure was on!  Presland and Sheppard both came back from behind in exciting games to get their wins. Unfortunately Black and Ogaard –Nielsen met two players with very hot putters.  A promising debut by Juliet Fenton justified her place in the second team squad and she will undoubtedly feature in next seasons plans.  Zandvoort continued her good form and secured another impressive win this season whilst Owens and Benton were up against the Essex girls on their home course.

A slight disappointment failing to make the second spot but the team have played some good golf this year and most of the squad have reduced their handicaps we must now focus on more consistency.

In very challenging conditions this was a keenly contested match. Sheringham can be a  stern test of golf, without blustery winds and  heavy showers thrown into the mix.  At lunch the home side were trailing by a point with the in form Ellie Judd and Sharon Black forging a strong partnership in the foursomes. The afternoon proved very different from the morning with the wind changing and the greens proving very difficult to gauge. The experience of Charlotte and Eppie helped to earn them comfortable wins whilst the youngsters gained some valuable experience. Jane had a titanic battle and fought back to halve the match.

After months of playing on dry barren fairways and a lot of roll the heavens opened and the morning foursomes was a real endurance test as torrential rain meant the course played very long and the conditions were very difficult. Whereas the practice round the day before required good course management, laying up to the numerous ditches, players were forced to revise their yardages. By the time the rain stopped in the afternoon the Norfolk team were faced with an uphill battle and were generally well behind on the fairway, of the big hitting Essex girls. The Essex team were far superior in that their handicaps were between 3 and 6, and most of them play golf full time. Norfolk gave their best, scrambling to save matches but on the day they were outclassed and could only watch and learn from the experience.

This was a competitive friendly which enabled both teams to field a mix of youth and experience. Norfolk had three debutants who combined well and gave the team a 2-1 lead after the morning foursomes despite a heavy downpour on the back nine.

In all the afternoon singles matches the Lincolnshire players overturned Norfolk’s lead to finish 5.5 to 3.5 winners. Congratulations to Chrissie Owens who in her first County II outing won both her matches convincingly. Promising debuts for the second team from two current Junior players ,Ellie Judd and Emily Anthony who gained valuable match experience.

Norfolk were literally put to Bed on what should have been an advantageous home course!

Going 3 down after the foursomes was a shock but it was still possible to turn the match around and all the matches had started well with the Norfolk girls up early in the afternoon.

All the matches were very tight and it was a day of twists and turns. The best result was Sharon Black, she came back from 2 down with 3 to play to win on the 18th

Eppie Zandvoort and Debbie Ogaard Nielsen used their local knowledge and also secured valuable points.

This result now means on finals day on 22nd August that Norfolk need to win the 2 singles matches against Bedfordshire to get a half point out of the match.

We now need to bounce back against Essex.

Norfolk County 2’s signalled their intent in very windy conditions and on a tricky course. The “Blacks Guide” to plotting your way round the common and some very quirky holes proved to give the visitors the upper hand. After a comprehensive victory in the foursomes the team went out in the afternoon with a very clear vision of finishing the job. There was no complacency and the players did their county and clubs proud! The two matches that were lost went to the last hole. It was a complete team performance and with the cohesiveness and spirit within this team we should be in contention to win the league. There is a long way to go but this team have the right work ethic and attitude. There were no poor performances and exceptionally good victories from Sue Henderson and Jane Sheppard. Edwina Gold who narrowly missed out on first team selection also did her bit and grafted hard to deliver 2 points!

On a very hot and sunny day with an enormous amount of run on the course and an interesting breeze the County 2 ladies had a good test of golf when they challenged the Eaton men .The ladies were using the game as a warm up to the match against Bedfordshire in June and it was an invaluable experience. The men provided some stiff opposition and despite the valiant efforts of Eppie Zandvoort and Sharon Black the men proved to be too strong winning 18 to 11. It was a match where golf was a true winner and the game was played in the right spirit yet with a competitive edge.

It was a good warm up for the team members that will playing in the county championship at Hunstanton on Friday.

Brister Salver - Weston Park Sunday 10th April

This invitation competition open to players who have represented Norfolk Ladies 2nd team in 2010 started the competitive county calendar for the season. Unfortunately due to work and players away on holiday it was a small field but it was good to get back into the swing.

The weather was fantastic and there are not many better places to be than Weston Park when you are basking in the sun.   The unusually dry conditions for the time of year and the recently treated greens proved a good test of golf but many struggled with their putting .

Unlike the final day of the Masters the competition was a two horse race between the second pairing of Tiffany Mills of Ryston Park (5) and Eppie Zandvoort of Eaton (7) both posting a creditable nett 74. Tiffany retained the Brister Salver on count back from Eppie who won the gross competition with a score of 81.
